THESIS FOR MASTERS IN URBAN PLANNING AND POLICY DESIGN

VOICING THE UNCONSCIOUS

This thesis, defended under the Politecnico di Milano Masters of Urban Planning and Policy Design program in 2022, sought to uncover the user preferences and psychological benefits of a biophilic greenspace design with the use of a virtual reality tool. The case study is on the design of Enota Park, a greenspace along the Beltline in Atlanta, Georgia, USA., and uses the exp-EIA method (the virtual reality tool) to allow the public to experience the design in virtual reality supplemented with a psychological survey. The data from the virtual reality experience is analyzed to understand the emotional and restorative appraisals of the design overall, while relating these results to the biophilic design attributes present in the design. The thesis also aimed to showcase the viability of the exp-EIA method as a public participation tool to strengthen communication between designer and user. Finally, as the case study site uses nature-based solutions to achieve the Sustainable Sites Initiative (SITES) Rating System standard, the biophilic attributes of these nature based solutions are used to showcase the multifunctionality of sustainable landscapes that extend beyond their material benefits and into the human health and well-being benefits
