Sonia Olivia is a land-based artist and spatial designer whose work explores the relationship between cultural memory and landscape. Through installations and immersive experiences, she investigates how places become living archives.
Rooted in the ancestral lands of her family in rural North Carolina, her practice examines how environmental change reshapes both the landscape and the memories held within it. Drawing on research in environmental psychology and cultural landscapes, she creates new ways of experiencing place.
Her work often challenges the flatness of maps and the expectation that history unfolds in a straight line. Using sculpture, installation, and translucent materials, she layers information so that multiple histories and relationships can be experienced simultaneously. As viewers move through her work, meaning shifts with perspective, revealing landscape as something remembered rather than simply observed.
Sonia received a B.S. in Environmental Science and Sustainability from the Georgia Institute of Technology and a Master's in Urban Planning and Policy Design from Politecnico di Milano.
